Deb & Nina: Beaverton Love

These two love each other to bits.

On October 17th they celebrated their 3rd Family Day together. As luck would have it, I was around to spend the morning with them! We met at Commonwealth Lake Park just in time for the fog to clear — also the time of day notoriously know as the best time to chase ducks. The fall colors paired perfectly with the blue sky — setting the perfect backdrop for Nina’s ruby red slippers to shine :)

The love these two have for each other was more than evident. It was infectious. It warmed my heart. Its obvious they are meant to be together - I am so glad I was able to share their special day with them.

The Attention-Getter

I should preface the next few paragraphs with some sort of disclaimer… Disclaimer: *the following is not about any client of mine. Its just a few cents about photographing children and a self-deprecating look back at my childhood* :)

Growing up I was always a brat — a drama queen. If there was a family/friend get-together and emotions were running high, I was the one who would (magically) get smacked in the nose by a rouge elbow during jump rope. Or I would throw a hissy-fit over the horrific-and-unjust-division of the Rock Candy Bag. Regardless of how I got there, I was always the one pouting on the couch, eyes wet, gasping for breath during the calm after my throws… I was the attention getter. No matter what I had to do. I got it.

Attention-Getters are not rare. I am positive every child goes through an Attention-Getting Phase, some last longer than others (mine was quite long….). We inhabit every family. And you shall know our name is Attention-Getter when we lay our Attention-Getting upon thee.

Photographing children (more than one child) is always an interesting experience (single children aren’t nearly as interesting… hahaha). The more people present the testier things get — excitement fills the air, so to speak. Inevitably the proverbial rogue elbow gets proverbially punched into someones proverbial nose.

This is when most parents begin to apologize profusely.

However, this is when I really start to enjoy myself. No, its not schadenfreude. Its just the kiddos are finally acting like themselves, and I can totally relate! Oh the emotion, the angst! The sleepiness, oh yes, you will have a nice nap after this little one! The passion!! The urgent demands!! Luckily, every single child (that I have met) seems to last a good hour before they rear their Attention-Getting , so I usually have plenty of photos that will please the Mommies and Daddies. My favorite though, are always the shots of the Attention-Getter, or Post-Attention-Getter (if I should be so lucky).

Enjoy the tiny pouting gallery below — if you do happen to see your little one’s face below please do not take offense, these are some of my most favorite moments as a photographer….

The Thomas Family

Please note: This family includes the Queens of Adorableness from Beaverton.

With their Grandmother (Tessi) and Grandfather (Pa) visiting from Southern California, these little girls had many loving arms to carry them around all day! Hugs, kisses, singing and M&M’s were omnipresent. As was a great deal of love.

Commonwealth Lake Park, Beaverton at sunset. Such a gorgeous family and day.

Queens of Adorableness: Caitlin & Maeve

You can just call this shoot Beaverton Child Photography!

Obviously adorable little ones live in Beaverton. No question about that. If you ask me (which you might as well, since you are here): these two are the Queens of Adorableness in Beaverton, Oregon.

maeve1cai2

This may be a bit deceptive, there were a lot more people present — multiple generations, in fact. However, I had to dedicate an entire post to this pair of beautiful sisters.

maeve2
Maeve has just turned one, loves burring her face into soft stuffed-puppy dogs and has impossible perfect red wisps for hair.

cai1
Caitlin is just about 4, going on 24. As any proper girl her age, she has swapped her interest in Backhoe’s for an avid interest in Princesses. She draws fantastic pictures and shares her Halloween candy. She is also very very fast on her Big Wheel.

We had a wonderful time in Beaverton, me and the girls. I certainly hope to see them again!

What a fun day at the Portland Children’s Museum!

Kiddos in fun costumes, scavenger hunts and candy :)

While several images were taken of each kiddo who sat upon my Photography Throne, not every image is perfect enough to be printed. In the gallery you will find the best shot (perhaps a couple) of each child I met. Only the images posted in the gallery are available ($15 for 1 5×7 print or $15 for 1 hi-res digital file).

Each image is processed in color and in black and white. Click a thumbnail if you would like to see the image larger. Once in the viewer for the larger image size, you can then click through the whole set in the large size (or as a slide show, fancy, I know). In the bottom left hand corner of the viewer you will see a number for each image…

That is the number we will use for ordering purposes. You can close-out of the viewer to return to the thumbnail-contact-sheet for quick viewing at anytime.

Take your time.

Little Shen

As far as I am concerned, this is the happiest child in Portland. All of Oregon for that matter…

Children’s portraiture can be a wicked challenge. Things like puke, cranky-pants, shyness and a general (healthy) sense of “I dont know if I should trust you, you stranger, you” can make things… interesting. Luckily, I dont encounter these things too frequently — there must be something in the Portland water.

I spent an extremely enjoyable hour or so with this little man and his grandparents. I’ve got to admit: I love doing family portraiture as much as just child portraiture. The interactions, the love — when you get to see shared facial expressions on faces that are decades apart — these things are amazing.

Shen has his grandmothers dimples.
His mother and fathers ridiculously calm temperament.
His grandfathers intense glances.
… Impeccable aim with his spit-up.
And his very own (new) two teeth.
He has also just figured out how to sit up all by himself — and wiggle backwards in a moon-walk-on-bum sort of way.
It’s figgin adorable.

We had a blast.
Enjoy this peek inside of a Portland Family Portrait Session!!

Portland Event Photography

I had the opportunity to photograph an event at the Portland Farmers Market in June. Every so often the market holds “Kids Cook” events. I was asked to embed myself (and my camera) among the children, who were making crepes.

Score.

This assignment was exciting for several reasons:

    1. There is nothing like Portland morning light.

    2. There is nothing like Portland produce.

    3. There is nothing like children covered in chocolate at 10 a.m.

    4. There is nothing like photographing festivities… especially when kids and sugar are involved.

My task: follow the kids through the Portland Farmers Market, as they shopped for their ingredients. Stalk them as they cook. Simple. Plus, its hard to get a bad shot when you are surrounded by cute little faces, fresh strawberries and the most vibrant golden sunlight and crisp air you can imagine.

Grant And His Little Sister Grace

There are few things more enjoyable than hanging out with kiddos on their front porch in the summer sun. Especially when they have just woken up from their nap…. And are full of energy — and full of peanuts.

I must admit: Grant was one of the most difficult kids to get in the view finder. He moves quicker than most kids I have met. But he was also one of the most fun. We made “raw chicken” soup out of dirt, gravel and the dog’s water bowl. We mowed through his mama’s freshly planted Impatients in his awesome yellow dump truck. Later, we munched on peanuts together.

Grant’s sister Gracie, just happens to be the antithesis of him… she a perfectly calm lil lady. Content to sit in her daddy’s arms, twiddling his watch and quietly observing everything. Don’t get me wrong, she certainly isn’t prissy or uninvolved. She squealed with delight when Grant smeared a dead spider on her forehead. She consistently kicked off her right bunny-slipper. And drooled enough for every infant on the block! Her mama calls her a “Little Hermit Crab” and that just kills me.

They are the perfect pair of kids. Talk about complimenting each other seamlessly.

Thank goodness they just live down the block — I’m certainly going to need a regular G&G fix!

eb.

With a relaxed teacher for a father and a calm yoga instructor for a mother, this lil tyke knew how to handle himself in front of the camera: like a champ.

He coo’d.
He squealed.
He giggled incessantly.
He decided it was time for a snack — and began to much a magnolia.

Then, after much cooperation, he decided it was time for a nap. So, in the perfect afternoon Portland sunshine, he threw the smallest of tizzy’s and cuddled into his mama’s arms. It was in her embrace that he quickly gave in to his sleepy eyes, as mama ran her fingertips down his forehead.

This family was a joy to be around. Easy going to a fault, and willing to improvise anything I asked to shoot.

Elliott and I enjoyed a one hour indoor session in my home studio and a one hour session in Laurelhurst Park, in South East Portland. These sessions were on separate days, about a week apart, to fit with the Boone family’s schedule.
